I have had this image colored and ready to make a card with for this tutorial since August 30! GASP! I finally have gotten a little organized and back on schedule with posts and tutorials. So, here it is!
Liquid Applique comes in more colors than just white, but all I have is white and I wanted some puffy pink dots for my scenery trees in this stamped image Country Barn by CD Stamps, so this is what I came up with. I like matching colors anyway, so this was the best way to make my puffs match my ink and cardstock too.
First, stamp your image on any CS and color it in with any medium. For my example here, I used watercolor paper and Brilliance graphite black ink.
ABOVE: Have the image ready that you want to add puffy color to, and gather the supplies you'll need:
- Liquid Applique
- Reinker bottle and matching inkpad (or other plastic reservoir)
- Toothpick
- Heat Tool
ABOVE: Carefully add the liquid applique as desired. See the small tree above where I added it? Hint: The smaller the blobs, the easier it will be to add your color to each blob with the toothpick.
***START BLOB DISCUSSION***
Just for fun I decided to look up what BLOB actually means and below is what I found. I got a good chuckle from meaning #4, and I sincerely hope that I do not belong in that category. I also liked #1 definition from the American Heritage Dictionary.
BLOB: noun, verb, blobbed, blob-bing.
- a globule of liquid; bubble.
- a small lump, drop, splotch, or daub: A blob of paint marred the surface.
- an object, especially a large one, having no distinct shape or definition: a blob on the horizon.
- a dull, slow-witted, and uninteresting person.
- to mark or splotch with blobs. [–verb (used with object)]
- A soft, amorphous mass.
- A daub, as of color.
ABOVE: Drop some reinker into the open part of your inkpad lid, or a plastic reservoir. Pick the ink up onto your toothpick by swiping it around in the pool of ink.
ABOVE: Lightly touch the tip of your ink soaked toothpick onto your blobbed (now that I know that is a real word, I can use it guilt-free) liquid applique. Because the toothpick tip is so fine, this is why the smaller the globule of liquid (that's hard to say), the better it will be to get complete coverage of color over your liquid applique blobs. Do this on all your blobs, or soft, amorphous masses. I just had to use that phrase at least once in my life!
Then, heat set the colored liquid applique blobs using your heat tool. I was unable to produce a photo of the heat gun actually doing it's job fluffing the liquid applique, but I do have a final picture of the completely puffed up blobs of liquid applique! See below. **Oh, and don't get too much ink on the tip of your toothpick or you may have an oops on your project, like I did to the right of my little tree.**
As you can see, you still end up with a little white around the edges of the puffs, but it still looks OK in my case, as I was just trying for some nice blooming flowers on my spring tree.
I finished my card and the picture and supply list is below.
SUPPLIES:
- STAMPS: Country barn by CD stamps
- CS: cameo coral, chocolate chip, old olive, watercolor paper, promise of spring retired CTMH paper
- INK: SU kiwi kiss, old olive, creamy caramel, close to cocoa, chocolate chip, going gray, baja breeze, cameo coral, ballet blue
- ACCESS: Liquid applique, chocolate satin ribbon, waterbrush, paper studio pearl brad, sewing machine and thread, SU dimensionals
Thanks for stopping in and reading my ramblings on blobs, aka soft amorphous masses, aka globule of liquids!
Happy Stamping!

Beautiful card! Love the bluebonnets! Great technique. It's also fun to color the white liquid applique with chalks once you've puffed it.

Your tutorial was so much fun to read! What do you use to color in your images...I love the results! I'm going to have to try this totally blobular technique tonight! Highly doubt that's a word, but it's fun to say....BLOB-U-LAR...

Laurie, you are cracking me up with the BLOB discussion! I FEEL like a big blob! Yes, Liquid Applique comes in different colors! TAC sells it, I think. Another really cheap option is to get Puffy Paint in the fabric paint section of your craft store (oh, you're in TExas, so that would be Hobby Lobby or Michael's! LOL!). I do that with white b/c I let my liquid applique get old & it stopped puffing. Who knew?
AND....I LOVE YOUR CARD!!!!!
